Bad money drives out good
One of the most interesting reasons that can be linked to the falling gold price is to be found in “Gresham’s Law” that “bad money drives out good”. The Tudor financier, Sir Thomas Gresham, found that: “When a government overvalues one type of money and undervalues another, the undervalued money will leave the country or disappear from circulation into hoards, while the overvalued money will flood into circulation.”
Artificial currency devaluation is nothing new. It is as old as the pyramids themselves. Sir Thomas Gresham was merely drawing conclusions from the studies of the Islamic scholar and historian, Al-Maqrizi, who noted the effect of currency devaluation during the Mamluk empire in Egypt.
Al-Maqrizi observed the effect of a liquidity crisis on the Mamluk dynasty in the early 15th century that caused money circulation to dry up. The solution was mass enforced currency devaluation through replacing the gold-and-silver-based Dinar, with copper coinage, or Fulus, and for a period the Mamluk economy recovered rapidly as trade once again flowed freely.
However, inflation soon crept in and prices ran out of control as the currency was repeatedly debased. All the while gold hoarding was taking place behind the scenes.
Fast-forward half a century, and the money printing continues apace, while demand for physical gold is rising sharply. The latest government to devalue its currency to support the slowing economy has been China.
The People’s Bank of China is cutting interest rates and allowing the value of the Yuan to fall. Chinese citizens concerned about their loss of spending power are buying gold. Gold is simply the best insurance against inflation, or deflation.
Tight supply
The other long term support to the gold price is that when prices fall below $1,000 many miners will be forced to cut output. The gold mining industry invested millions in projects that are only profitable when prices are above those levels, and it has been absolutely hammered by falling prices.

Barrick Gold, the world’s largest miner of the metal that is listed in the US, has seen its shares fall as much as 30pc this year to a 25-year low. In London Randgold Resources shares are down 10pc, and Mexican precious metals miner Fresnillo has seen its shares fall 12pc.
The smaller listed miners had an even more turbulent time. Tanzanian gold miner Acacia Mining is down 38pc; and the Russian miner Petropavlovsk, which was founded by Peter Hambro, has seen its shares collapse during the past five years.
The best insurance

The easiest way to get access to gold are through low-cost funds. Popular physical gold exchange traded funds – or ETFs – include ETFS Physical Gold (PHGP) denominated in sterling and ETFS Physical Gold (PHAU) denominated in US dollars. Also BullionVault and GoldMadeSimple, offer low-cost services where small amounts of money can be deposited, which is then backed by gold.
For those who want to own physical gold coins or bars then there are established dealers such as ATS Bullion, BullionByPost, and Chard.
The Royal Mint has also extended its offering of gold and silver bullion to investors.

Questor wouldn’t recommend buying gold mining shares, or funds that invest in miners, as it is too high risk. The first rule of investing is capital preservation. And in the face of mass currency devaluation around the world then an allocation of about 5pc in assets such as gold looks sensible.
The future is uncertain and gold is the most effective insurance against that.

What sort of body does a woman find desirable? Perhaps the most obvious physical characteristic she looks for in a man is height.
Studies consistently find that women consider tall men to be attractive. In analyses of personal ads, 80 per cent of women state they want to meet a man who is 6ft or taller.
Men who indicate in their personal ads that they are tall have also been shown to receive far more responses from women.
Other studies show women prefer tall men as husbands and put an even greater emphasis on height in shorter-term sex partners. Women even place importance on height when selecting sperm donors.
Two studies also found that taller-than-average men tend to have a greater number of live-in girlfriends and more children, confirming their popularity for romance and reproduction.
And there does seem to be an underlying logic in women's preference for tall men. In Western cultures, tall men tend to have higher socio-economic status than short men.
Each added inch of height has been shown to add several thousand pounds to a man's annual salary.
It is estimated that, on average, 6ft men earn more than £100,000 across a 30-year career than 5ft 5in men.
They also tend to be healthier than shorter men - and if they're policemen, they get assaulted less than their shorter colleagues, which suggests height commands more respect from other men. What more could a girl want?

According to new scientific research, a woman will literally sniff out a man's genetic make-up before she decides if he's right for her.
A woman's sense of smell reaches a peak around the time of her ovulation, the 24-hour window -during the monthly menstrual cycle in which she can become pregnant.
The genes responsible for fighting off disease-causing bacteria and viruses are found in a group of genes called the major histocompatibility complex, or MHC.
Different people have various versions of these genes  -  and it turns out that women can benefit in two ways from mating with men whose MHC genes are dissimilar to their own.
Such a mate is likely to have more dissimilar genes in general, so finding someone dissimilar attractive might help to prevent many of the birth defects associated with reproducing with close genetic relatives.

In a revealing study, Brazilian researchers asked 29 men to wear cotton skin patches for five days to absorb their sweat  -  and thus their body odours.
A sample of 29 women then smelled each cotton patch and evaluated the odour on a scale from attractive to unattractive.
Scientists identified the specific MHC complex of each man and woman through blood tests. Women found the aromas of men who had a complex dissimilar to their own to be the most desirable.
The odours of men who had a complex similar to their own made them recoil in disgust.

Marijuana Users at Risk for Early Psychosis

Psychotic illness occurs significantly earlier among marijuana users, results of a meta-analysis suggest.

Data on more than 22,000 patients with psychosis showed an onset of symptoms almost three years earlier among users of cannabis compared with patients who had no history of substance use.

The age of onset also was earlier in cannabis users compared with patients in the more broadly characterized category of substance use, investigators reported online in Archives of General Psychiatry.

"The results of this study provide strong evidence that reducing cannabis use could delay or even prevent some cases of psychosis," Dr. Matthew Large, of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, and co-authors wrote in conclusion.

"Reducing the use of cannabis could be one of the few ways of altering the outcome of the illness because earlier onset of schizophrenia is associated with a worse prognosis and because other factors associated with age at onset, such as family history and sex, cannot be changed."

Psychosis has a strong association with substance use. Patients of mental health facilities have a high prevalence of substance use, which also is more common in patients with schizophrenia compared with the general population, the authors wrote.

Several birth cohort and population studies have suggested a potentially causal association between cannabis use and psychosis, and cannabis use has been linked to earlier onset of schizophrenia. However, researchers in the field remain divided over the issue of a causal association, the authors continued.

Attempts to confirm an earlier onset of psychosis among cannabis users have been complicated by individual studies' variation in methods used to examine the association. The authors sought to resolve some of the uncertainty by means of meta-analysis.

A systematic search of multiple electronic databases yielded 443 potentially relevant publications. The authors whittled the list down to 83 that met their inclusion criteria: All the studies reported age at onset of psychosis among substance users and nonusers.

The studies comprised 8,167 substance-using patients and 14,352 patients who had no history of substance use. Although the studies had a wide range of definitions of substance use, the use was considered "clinically significant" in all 83 studies. None of the studies included tobacco in the definition of substance use.

The studies included a total of 131 patient samples.

Substance use included alcohol in 22 samples, cannabis in 41, and was simply defined as "substance use" in 68 samples.

Alcohol use was not significantly associated with earlier age at onset of psychosis.

On average, substance users were about 2 years younger than nonusers were. The effect of substance use on age at onset was greater in women than in men, but not significantly so. Heavy use was associated with earlier age at onset compared with light use and former use, but also not significantly different, the authors reported.

Substance users were two years younger at the onset of psychosis compared with nonusers. Age at onset was 2.7 years earlier among cannabis users compared with nonusers.

Acknowledging limitations of the study, the authors cited the lack of information on tobacco use and its association with earlier age at onset of psychosis, and the lack of data on individual patients inherent in all meta-analyses.

Despite the limitations, the authors said the findings have potentially major clinical and policy implications.

"This finding is an important breakthrough in our understanding of the relationship between cannabis use and psychosis," they wrote in conclusion. "It raises the question of whether those substance users would still have gone on to develop psychosis a few years later."

"The results of this study confirm the need for a renewed public health warning about the potential for cannabis use to bring on psychotic illness," they added.

Power of attorney is granted to an “attorney-in-fact” or “agent” to give that individual the legal authority to make decisions for an incapacitated “principal.” The laws for creating a power of attorney vary from state to state, but there are certain general guidelines to follow. Before you or a loved one signs any documents, however, be sure to consult with an attorney concerning all applicable laws and regulations.
The principal determines the amount of power given to the attorney-in-fact, and this individual can be given the authority to deal with only one particular issue (a specific power of attorney), or to handle most of the principal’s personal and financial matters (a general power of attorney). Regardless of the type of power of attorney granted, the attorney-in-fact is responsible for keeping accurate records of all transactions that he or she makes on behalf of the principal. The attorney-in-fact also is responsible for distinguishing between the types of decisions he or she has the power to make and other decisions.
There are multiple types of decisions that the attorney-in-fact can be given the power to make, including the power to:
◾Make financial decisions
◾Make gifts of money
◾Make health care decisions, including the ability to consent to giving, withholding, or stopping medical treatments, services, or diagnostic procedures. (Note: your loved one can also make a separate “health care power of attorney” to give only this power to an individual.)
◾Recommend a guardian
Normally the attorney-in-fact is paid, which means that the principal should decide on a set amount—or the method for determining a pay scale. It should be noted that the actions of an attorney-in-fact are legally considered those of the principal, so the principal should always choose a trustworthy individual. This is especially important because the power of attorney is not regulated by the court system, making it easier for the attorney-in-fact to misuse his or her power. In the document, the principal should always include restrictive language, including clauses
◾Requiring the attorney-in-fact to keep accurate and adequate records, which are to be provided on a regular basis to the principal or other named individuals
◾Prohibiting the attorney-in-fact to give gifts, or setting a limit on the amount of such gifts
Generally, not having a power of attorney document is better than having one that gives power of attorney to someone that the principal doesn’t trust. Regardless, the principal should always let another trusted individual—other than the attorney-in-fact—know where the power of attorney document (original and copies) is kept and who the attorney-in-fact is. Because incapacitating accidents are not predictable and can happen at any age, it is important to choose the right attorney-in-fact, write a clear power of attorney document, and understand the ways that the document can be challenged and terminated
